You get significantly less oil pressure drop through one of these.

You may fitt some kind of "valve" to bleed the oil cooler though.

On a personal level i'd be wary of mounting it upside down, even if there was a facility to bleed it any tiny air bubbles in the oil (like you see when you pour new oil) would collect at the top. Can't see any probs mounting the cooler on its end though provided the pipes were the right way round (bottom in, top out) If it's an A series and space is an issue why not fit an oil/water heat exchanger as fitted to some Metro engines, surprisingly efficient + the oil gets up to temp quickly.
