 Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
Are these the same or not? I have a complete Mini set up of hub/disc/caliper/drive flange to go on the rear of my Rossa. A pair of MGTF rear brake calipers arrived today so I removed the Mini calipers and offered up the MG ones which wouldn't even think about fitting. The mounting holes are fine and need elongating as expected but there's no room between the hub and disc for the carrier and it won't fit on the other side of the hub flange either. So, does the Metro drive flange stick out further than the Mini one which would allow the MG caliper to fit? If I need the Metro flange can I still use the Mini disc type cv joint or will I need a Metro one? Questions, questions...

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
mgf calipers are more suitable for use on the rover 100 metro type parts as used on rear of libra .Have a look at posts by scappyloz who had a coupe with mini front and k series rear with different wheel pcd etc front was on forum about a year ago search in coupe section.Have seen someone has used vw golf rear calipers but do not know how it was done or how much modifiction needed.

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
Mini and early Metro drive flanges are interchangeable apart from a raise section in the centre of the Metro versin which locates on the metro wheel.
Are you asking about the drive flange or the swivel hub?

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
I think I'm really getting confused here When I asked about the drive flanges I was thinking about there being two different types, one with a longer nose on the hub side (as used with vented discs) and which might move the disc out a bit to give more clearance between it and the mounting lugs on the hub - the problem being that there isn't enough room to get the caliper lugs in. Following Tim's link and reading the post it is clear that some machining needs to be done which I hadn't quite twigged - I thought it was just to clean up the rough face of the caliper mount but it seems that the hub mounts have to be machined down to 12mm also. (I spent ages last night searching, printing off and studying posts and somehow I missed that one ) Anything I read that listed the parts required for the conversion specifically said that Metro flanges were needed and I wondered if there was a particular reason why Mini ones won't do - can anybody say definitely whether or not the Mini ones are ok or whether I need the longer nosed vented disc type as seen here http://www.minispares.com/search/classi ... lange.aspx My reasoning is that the disc is bolted to the drive flange so if the flange is further out the disc will also be further out which will increase the space between it and the caliper mounting lugs on the hub - or am I talking poo as usual??

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
From memory, yes Metro drive flanges are thinner and move the disc away from the hub due to the increased thickness of the disc.

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
I have fitted Metro vented discs with their drive flanges and calipers to Mini swivel hubs and it all lined up OK.
I have also fitted Metro 4 pot non-vented calipers to standard Mini swivel hubs with 8.5" Mini discs.
The only non standard part needed was the ERA Mini double diameter caliper bolts to match the 3/8" UNF thread in the swivel hub to the 10mm hole in the caliper.

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
Thanks all I'll carry on collecting parts and see how I get on over the winter. I think the first thing has to be a servo (which should be straightforward enough) and then the rear brakes but I'm not too keen to take all the interior out again to get at the handbrake although I'll be more than happy to get rid of the GTM cables - I HATE these things...

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
Metro (4-pot) on the left and Mini (2-pot) on the right. As you can see West is correct and the Metro flange will move the disc outwards from the hub and it's what you need if you are fitting MGF calipers the same way that I did - you mix and match though as you use standard Mini 8.4" solid discs which would have been fitted to the other flange in the picture. Beware that before '86-ish some Metros didn't use the 4-pot calipers. I'm not sure whether they used the same drive flange as a Mini at that point. Minis with 7.5" or 7" discs used a completely different drive flange. Iain

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
Hi Iain. Thanks very much for that - you can't beat a good picture and it couldn't be clearer from that one. I'm waiting for a TF handbrake lever and cables to arrive and all I need now is flanges and cv joints. On one of the other threads on this topic you mentioned that you made up your own brake hoses Can you say how you did it and where you got the parts because it's not something that I would have ever dreamt of doing with the safety aspect in mind? Cheers. Raymond

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
Fairly sure it was Merlin Motorsport but.... I had a bit of a DOH!!! moment about two weeks later when I realised that the sets you can buy from most of the Mini suppliers for fitting Metro 4-pots to a Mini have the correct hose in them with the Mini 3/8UNF bulkhead fitting on one end and a 10mm Banjo fitting on the other. Probably cheaper to buy them than buying the individual fittings.

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
The picture above has answered one of my questions of Metro flanges, been brainstorming ideas for my new rear suspension, altho being thinner they also increase track width over Mini flanges.

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
It also explains why my car has a noticeably wider track on the front with Metro 4 pots - the rear looks slightly odd with the wheels tucked further into the arch.

Re: Mini & Metro Drive Flanges
After a week spent cleaning, measuring and painting I finished assembling my rear disc set up today and it worked out fine although it's all still sitting on the bench! Everything just bolted together with the exception of the caliper mounting holes on the hubs which each needed to be brought in by 2mm with a round file. No other machining was needed and the discs are off centre in the calliper by 2mm so an adjustment of 1mm is needed to get it spot on. However, the adjustment is needed to move the calliper out the way so it needs shimmed rather than having material taken off. A very thin washer between the hub and calliper would fix it but I've left it for now because the hub nut is barely more than finger tight and I'm not sure if it might pull the new bearings in a little when I tighten it up to 200 lbft and I might manage to get that 1mm there. Next step is to get the hubs on the car and measure up for the brake hoses which I'll have to get made - the hoses in the 4 pot conversion sets mentioned above have turned out to be not suitable because the banjos are on each end of the short bridging hoses. I've also managed to dismantle the ends of the outer handbrake cables at the lever end although the nipples on the inner cables had to be cut off (I ruined 2 drill bits trying to drill them out ) and I plan to shorten these to fit a Mini lever with MGF quadrant. It's all go
