3D printers / rapid prototyping
Just having a play with an "open Source" home built one. from drawing to object in hand in an hour, I am still amazed at this stuff lol Attachment:

surface texture due to using cheap filaments, the better filament gives a smoother finish.

Hi Ken, Clever stuff, if you make more can you sell to me if only to stop people asking what it is and who made it Cheers John

Re: 3D printers / rapid prototyping
Very nice. I've toyed with getting one myself but, as you say, it's the surface texture problems with the cheaper printers/materials that puts me off.
Well it's that and the derisory laughter of my wife when ever I raise the suggestion.
I keep showing her pictures of 3D printed shoes and she keeps showing me pictures of 3D printed artificial body parts. I'm taking that as a veiled threat.

Re: 3D printers / rapid prototyping
As usual with new technology the products get better and the costs come down. I bought one for the company I work for last year at a cost of £1500.00. It proved so useful I bought a chinese made version with two printing heads so that you can inlay a different colour into whatever you are making and more versatile to boot for just over £600.00!! They do have limitations but by playing around with the settings and different filament materials you can get an acceptable finish. I will be playing around at making a badge and wheel centres for the K3 and see how it goes. Peter.

Anything over 200mm square/cube is beyond what I can do. A little further on. Attachment:

Re: 3D printers / rapid prototyping
The possibilities are great, the stuff that gets rapid prototyped at work is impressive, we have our own machines. I have even started getting brackets for the test rigs rapid prototyped for holding the odd shaped pumps and odd shaped tywrap blocks etc.

Re: 3D printers / rapid prototyping
good stuff ken
did you make the printer to ?
I play with 3D printers for a day job its nice to see them making there way on to forums like this. We have 3 ultimaker 2 ,1 makerbot x2, and a 1 form one. still send most stuff off to big printers but a good bit of kit to have around. i am hoping to print some stuff soon for the spyder. there is a new carbon fiber filament that looks promising (i will try it soon)

Re: 3D printers / rapid prototyping
It's a reprap self build "kit", idea is you can print another printer. Carbon fibre filament on order along with some ABS.
