Some fuel and temperature gauges (Smiths particularly) need to be powered from a voltage stabiliser to stop them reacting to voltage changes in the main system.
This is basically just a coil and a bi-metal strip which drops the voltage down to an average of 10v.

B - battery (ignition live)
I - instruments (temp and fuel gauges)
You can get solid state replacements on ebay but I haven't tried them.
