Can you explain why not. A 1400 Hyabusa would make it move quite well I suspect - unless the problem is the lack of torque against the weight of the car. A coupe with a bike engine would I suspect be less than 600kg anyway????

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
A fully kitted out zcars mini with a r1 engine weight is little more than 600kg but they can still shift. I don't know the exact weight of my own coupe but can't see it being near that weight as it's only bare bones.

I guess it's dependant on a lot of factors, you can compensate for the weight with gearing..but then you'll acheive a low top speed...etc etc. I would want over 1000cc for anything over 600kg. I took my friend out in the Fury today and while still completely mental, it had noticeably lost a little bit of it's 'edge' with the weight of a passenger. Not that he noticed!

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
and mine!
I find I am completing in a class with an 1800cc limit but I am the only car not running a motorbike engine.
The other cars weigh about 400kg and 150 - 180 bhp (vs my 600kg and 130bhp) and have 1000 or 1100 cc engines with close ratio sequential gearboxes. I was doing ok at the start of the season but not at the end.
Maybe i am not the greatest driver but I seem to be at a disadvantage to start with. I really enjoy my bit of motorsport but it is no fun turning up knowing you are going to get beaten.

David Hayabusa engine and a diet The sequential box is a killer too, your opposition will be making so much time on you with your conventional gearchange.

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
I took my care to Silverstone today, a track day on the new GP circuit.
My car went ok, but it randomly seems to dive from side to side on straights, maybe but not definitely linked to coming on and off the accelerator. Anybody got any suggewstions?
David

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
Worn joints in the rear suspension, Subframe stiffness which we have talked about in the past, and the stiffness of the steering arm itself along with the rest of the toe linkage, which would be made worse by large slicks.

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
Omost certainly the rear bending or flexing . This occurs on standard GTMs which retain the rubber bushes. also Minitici could tell you about this rear mounts bending after only a few road miles.
You may not be running the standard rear , but the principles are the same, something is moving in the rear.

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
Thanks, I felt it was from the back of the car but the "instructor" we had took the car out and he felt it was a steering problem (ie front steering mechanism). I thought it was to do with the power on power of changes - although it did not do it at gear changes? Ben thought it was occurring randomly on fast straight but agreed that the car was fine in bends. He felt the car was unsafe on that circuit, so I put it back on the trailer after about 12 laps and enjoyed myself in the supplied Lotus 2-11, which is fabulous.
We checked all of the wheel geometry a few weeks ago and we are going to check it again today.
I am going to Z cars on Monday to see what they can offer.

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
I had a nasty problem with my steering rack a few weeks ago. After searching for the source of the problem in the rear suspension for weeks, finaly I have discovered that the rack could move a bit if forced hard. This resulted in quite nasty wandereing in fast straights. The problem came in randomly, but allways at speed.
You could not move the rack by forcing the wheel with bare hand, I needed to veld a long handle on a steel wheel to get a "test tool".

 Re: Coupes and motorbike engines
It looks like wear in the track rod ends in the back suspension is the problem, together with a abit of wear in a front ball joint.
