Post Montego callipers a straight swap for metro on a Libra?
Hi all,

Anyone know if the Montego 2.0L front brake callipers are a bolt on replacement for the metro ones on the Libra? Both use 240mm vented discs so I'm hoping they'll go straight on?

Thanks

Jamie

Hi Jamie

I've got these calipers and no the bolt holes don't line up. I had 10 pairs of adapter plates made up to suit Rover 820 285mm discs but they're all sold.
I'll have a rummage in the garage to find the pattern.

Bob.

I wonder if I've got a pair of those on mine. I'm sure the guy I bought the car from said the front used rover 800 pads. The pads are hardly worn so I won't be changing them for a while!

Thanks Bob, I'd appreciate it.

My rear callipers are seized as well I think - I've read somewhere about using Rover 600 callipers as the 200/400 units are not so good. Anyone know if they will bolt straight up and use the existing handbrake cables?

Cheers

Jamie

I replaced my 200/400 calipers with MGF/MGTF or Rover 800 calipers [all the same I believe].
If my memory serves me right the bolt holes are 1mm out so a bit of filing is required.

I have a pair of MGF callipers and cables so will probably look into that. I presume the original cables have to be replaced with the correct MGF ones??

mgf mania do a kit to convert to 280mm discs for £200 for discs and adaptor bracket and bolts needed you would still need pads and callipers seems a bit expensive but all the work of making it fit has been done most non standard discs will not fit straight on because of unusual 3.75 wheel stud pcd. Maybe worth look at tf 4 pots if you have room behind the wheels you have as Sidewinder did

I think I would have from for the Tf 4 pots as I'm running the TF 11 spoke wheels. Was wondering if the car would be a bit overbooked with these though, especially if I wimp out and just free off my rover 220 rear callipers?

You should be able to reuse the cables but you will need to re-route them.

If I had those wheels I would have the AP calipers and 304mm discs,a direct bolt on replacement, no adapters and no re-drilling of the discs.
I've looked for the drawings for the Montego adapter brackets but they have been on my bench for a few years, I can ask Alan Britton of Rossabitz [who made them for me] to look up his drawings for you if you still want to go this route.

Dump them, but not the cable arms/brackets, you may need them.
I've not looked at 600 calipers so cannot comment on them.
I also had adapter brackets [ some still available] for the MGF rear calipers to go with Rover 820 260mm discs which also re drilling.

Thanks for the info Bob and don't worry about the bracket pattern - after the comments here it probably would be better to go with the AP 4 pots and bolt them straight up.

I'm presuming these balance up ok with MGF rears? I'll have a look at the handbrake cable situation this weekend but there doesn't appear to be a massive amount of slack to re-route them with and the thought of taking out the tank to fit new cables is not appealing. Mind you, if the 220 clapper are shot I've got to replace them with something so may as well bite the bullet :D

Did GTM supply standard MGF cables for this purpose or were they a special? I have a good pair of MGF cables I could use.

Originally the cables were donor items, mine came from a Rover 420 along with the calipers and hand brake.
A couple of years ago I replaced the cables which I got from Reyland, donor suppliers to GTM, who was selling off his stock. His cables [inner] were 20mm shorter than the originals which meant I had to move the cable arm/bracket over using only one bolt hole [ I rectified this recently] ,which is why I said not to throw them away as you might have to see which fits best.

Cheers Bob. I'll have a play this weekend and see how it all stacks up.

My experience on several cars with that set up has been the balance is very good, both and road and track.

I would suggest standard pads as it does take a while to heat the fronts up and they tend to bite better from cold than various performance pads I tried. Having said that Mintex 1144 on track were eye poppingly good.

Looks like the 4 pots and MGF rears it is then :D

Standard pads would be handy - cheaper!
