Post 160VVC - Starting issue and a few others...
I've got a 160 VVC out of an Elise in my K3, and I've got a few slightly odd problems (or features?) I'll list them all as they might be related...

1) Over the past week or so, when cold, the car sometimes will start, run for a second then die, but will always start fine on second attempt after removing the key and waiting 10 seconds.
2) 5500rpm rev limit - I have checked all plugs and they are in the correct place, VVC mech is just about movable with the HCU off.
3) Occasionally a erratic idle - although this hasn't happened for a while, and not since the starting issue has developed.
4) Slight off power backfire at low rpm - nothing too loud, just a cough or two on deceleration (might be a feature?)

The car is currently without a Catalytic converter - planning on putting on on as marginal on noise and have heard the VVC benefits from a bit of back pressure? As for whether sensors are working - who knows, there isn't an OBD plug and I haven't been able to find out how to wire one in.

Any clues on how to approach sorting these? I'm fine with pretty much all mechanicals but not overly clued up on engines. :(

1) Starting then dying straight away is a symptom of the 5AS not disarming properly - try clicking the fob off and on a few times before you turn it over and see if that makes any difference?
2)5500 rev limit means it has gone into a limp mode. Often caused by the VVC units not being properly timed together although I suspect many other things can do this too. Has it previously been okay to 7k+ and only just started doing this? The VVCs can't go out of time in place so would only be this if it wan't put together right. If the VVC mechs aren't timed in properly I can point you to a few good articles on sorting them but not sure how easy it is with the engine in??
3) All sort of things can cause this.
4) In my experience there are two main causes for popping back, one is HT leads/plugs missing a spark and then unburnt fuel going down the exhaust, the other is a slight air leak on the exhaust manifold.

1) Could be, but I've not got a fob as the car has the Talon immobilizer deactivator thingamajig I believe (fitted by previous owner)
2) No idea whether it's always done this or not, I've been relatively gentle on the car for the first month of driving, I only realised as I pulled out from a junction and hit the limiter quite hard...
3)Suspected that would be the case... :(
4)Will check as the HT leads are a bit suspect anyway

Yep, checked and working fine (~12.6-12.9v after a few days or hours of being left and 14.2v driving)
