Post Re: Z Cars rear suspension
I am keen to upgrade the rear suspension on my Spyder to the Z cars system or similar. I am thinking of doing my own version for the following reasons.
- Cost and freight. (to Australia)
- Customisation required to fit my car (including Toyota engine)
- I have access to fabrication and machining facilities.

I can learn most of what I need by measuring my car and looking at photos of the Z cars setup but there are some details that would make the job easier such as:
1. Size of rod ends used.
2. Hub internal dimensions/details
3. Any other trailing arm dimensions. In the photos it looks like the trailing arm pivot axis is parallel to the hub axis, so static camber and toe are obtained by adjusting the pivot axis to be non-parallel to the vehicle axle lines.

Just a quick update on progress:

Car is now at z cars and the new suspension is fabricated and trial fitted, its now getting powder coated so hoping to have the car back within a couple of weeks. They had to make a few changes during the trial fit so it was well worth sending the car down there, hopefully now all the new kits will bolt straight up with no trouble.

Couple of pictures below and you can see some others on the z cars Facebook page -https://www.facebook.com/zcarsclassicsreimagined/

Looks like you'll need to stiffen your shockers as the pivot point of the arms is lower. It'll make the spring action better though.

Good point. The shock will be more vertical now which is no bad thing.

Looking good. Useful pics as I can now see how you adjust the camber (with that slot on the outside mounting) and presumably the toe is adjusted using the rose joint bolts. Not sure how securely the camber adjustment locks though? Is there anything to prevent the bolt sliding up and down the slot other than the tightness of the bolt? I'm sure they will have thought of that though :)

Yes the toe is adjusted on the rose joints. I see what your saying RE: the camber adjustment but I don't think anyone had any problems previously?

Other pics I have seen show a clevis attached to the camber adjust bolt, and extended up through the top slot. This allows micrometre camber adjustment and locks the position of the bolt.

Found it. See Jaycart1227 post 1/3 down on page 4 of this thread.

Be worth checking that they're aware of that adjuster Jamie as it's probably not part of the jig or anything. Looks pretty easy to adjust with that, although the toe might be a pain initially, assuming you'd have to pop the bolt and spacers out, turn the rose joint and then re fit & re measure each time. But once it's right it ain't going anywhere.

Indeed, I'll have a word with Chris about that just in case. You can see the slot is machined in the bracket to take the adjuster so it's in hand hopefully.

Yes, the mounting bracket isn't in place yet to stabilize the camber adjustment, it will then have nuts above and below on a thread for easy adjustment. It's a little bit fidley but works fine.

Quick update:

The kit is now fabricated and powdercaoted ready for fitment. I'm off to z cars on Saturday to help fit it to my car - can't wait!!

One thing you'll notice from the pictures is that the engine steady bars are now adjustable which should make centralising the exhaust in the clam much easier.

Good stuff, mines next

Looks like they're supplying some much heavier duty spreader plates than the original ones. Also glad that the kit will use MGF bearings and they have sorted the track widening.

Another consequence is there will be less anti-squat. Does anyone know the intent - and is there any effect on launch, acceleration or braking?

Guys with all due respect this isn't "new" there are a good few cars out there already with this kit and it is supposedly a transformation. The intent is your libra or spyder won't corner like a blancmange anymore. It's been done to death but it massively reduces flex, easier to set up and stays adjusted correctly unlike the originals which tend to go out of adjustment. I haven't read any complaints akin to the concerns mentioned above from anyone who actually owns a car with the kit fitted.
