Post Rear Fuel Tank
Has anyone looked at putting the fuel tank in the back? One option might be above the exhaust :shock: and another option might be to have twin tanks in front of the engine?

Hi Peter, far better to balance the weight out a bit and put it up front well away from hot exhausts and engines.

Peter dont think i would want it at the rear not much to protect it in the event of a rear end shunt just my opinion

Hello Peter good to see the reset worked.

I had wondered about doing a tank that fitted within the tunnel. going cable change and moving the coolant pipes outside of the tunnel, I did work it out it and I remember it would need a supplemented tank to get the range where I wanted it and to use that as a big swirl pot.

Anything we can do to get the weight forward and low is good for the weight balance.

I built a frame around mine for a bit of extra protection, lets face it, if you are in an old GRP kit car and you have a big shunt, where the tank is is the least of your problems! Always best up front though, for all the reasons given above.

Back in the late 80’s when i was renovating my Coupe, i found another Coupe at my local scrap yard which had been written off. I bought it off them complete for spares. It had been in a heavy front end collision - the whole front end was very badly damaged, enough to bend the chassis at the front end. It had the square original GTM-made petrol tank fitted in the front subframe which was completely intact & undamaged!! As my Coupe only had a Mini petrol tank, i fitted the one from the crashed car into it (probably still in it now).
Those Mini front subframes are really quite strong.

Thanks for the responses.
Ive got one of those chunky steel items though its going to need some modification. I want to carry a 13 inch spare wheel which will fit in the front ok but I could get a battery down there instead and get some better air flow over the rad if the tank gets relocated elsewhere. Its more trouble trying to shoehorn the spare rim in the back. The tunnel isnt really practical for me as Im A series and need the room for gearstick and the rest but agree that its the best theoretical location for COG. How warm does it get between the engine and the rear bulkhead? Would suitable heat shielding be the solution?

The boot in my old cox used to get hot, I've got the old Cox exhaust in my Kano Coupe but have wrapped it and put an alli heat shield over it next to the inner boot moulding, I put the fuel tank in the chassis Vee in the Old Cox and replicated in the Kano car, which I hopped would leave space for a spare wheel standing in front of the tank as in my old Cox, sadly even with a space saver spare this is not possible unless i cut the space saver into 2 halves :roll: as I have the condenser radiator, a/c filter dryer, Davis Craig water pump all eating away into the spare wheel space.
In my old Cox the battery was up front mounted on top the L-H side of the forward facing bit of the subframe, there is pictures posted on here from the time another person asked where to put a battery

Hi John, having tried to think of a car with a tank near an engine I cant come up with one a a precedent so I think this might be project for a braver builder than me. I did quite enjoy your thread on your rebuild, Im thinking Davies Craig water pump as well. Back to plan A: To get the 13" full size wheel and tyre in place Ive cut a bit out of the bulkhead. Its a removable cover so I can get to the back of the pedals and other gubbins. Im having another look at the shape of tank to go for and will look at getting one made. If I look at having the battery location on the front subframe passenger side I can design in enough space for it I guess.

On the Kano Coupe, I have located the battery behind the passenger seat, when i next put the drivers seat in (it stays in the house) I will see if I have enough leg room to put the emergency spare behind the seat, or it will stand vertically between the passengers legs???
When I went away for race weekends, loaded with tent, tools and food I used to put a 15lt Jerry can of water plus other things not heat sensitive in the boot, the water was always quite warm after a 2 hour drive :wink:

Good decision not to put the tank at the back. It really must lie within the protection of the chassis/subframes.
Are you intending to use the car for very long journeys?
The reason I ask is that you could carry an emergency inflator kit?
Many modern cars use them.

Lakeland - I was building this as a road rally / stage rally car so we wanted to carry a full size spare. The one and only time I had cause to use a can of tyreweld, the hole in the side wall was too big to plug, I still carry one in case of niggly slow punctures though and Ive got a kit that came out my old galaxy which I carry in my road car .....as well as a full size spare :)

Im not too concerned about having the tank in the back and being exposed to a rear end shunt, Id be looking to make a cradle out of box section and it will probably be foam filled if it went over the exhaust, its the heat issue more than anything.

Anyone recommend a fabricator for having a tank made to measure?

Hi Peter,
We can fabricate bespoke petrol tanks in steel.
On my earlier car I put the petrol tank behind a bulkhead in the passenger footwell.
This kept it well away from any potential accident damage, but did mean that the capacity was only about 4 gallons.
