Coupe - Cracked bonnet/gel coat
Hi,
Whilst cutting a hole in my coupe bonnet for a fuel cap, the bonnet split! Damn! Does anyone have any tips or recommendations as to how to fill the crack before a respray? Normal body filler? Also, has anyone strengthened the bonnet with this sort of penetration?? Thanks! Ken

Ken is it a gelcoat crack or crack right through if you post a pic it would help for people to give advice. Normal body filler on its own will be no good it will crack out again

Hi Elansprint! Many thanks for your reply. Hopefully these pics will show it. It looks just like the gel coat. Cheers

To be safe I would add a couple of extra layers of CSM and resin underneath the crack to prevent flexing then open out the gel coat crack to about 6mm wide using a Dremel or die grinder then fill it with a fibre reinforced filler before sanding and re-finishing.

Re: Coupe - Cracked bonnet/gel coat
Ken I agree with gtm driver above couple of layers of csm on the back then grind out crack on top into a V extend 15mm past end of crack i would then use a layer of gf tissue to cover the whole ground out area so it bonds whole surface together then build up with gf then flat to profile a skim of filler is acceptable but just remember it can sink

Ken it is not difficult just messy and time consuming to build up the layers there is a book by miles Wilkins on fibreglass he is regarded as the guru in lotus circles good reading if you can find a copy
