Post Sherpa Brakes
Just been reading a thread on 16v mini's about using sherpa brake calipers with princess discs… just wondered if anyone on here has any experience of trying this out?

Might be a good way to decent budget brakes…

Any ideas about the unsprung weight issues that might come up?

J

Funnily enough, yes. I've got a pair of Princess discs on the way via ebay, and I should be sorting the calipers at the weekend. As for unsprung weight....... erm........

As heavy as metro turbo calipers and discs do you think?

I read somewhere that they were the same calipers as used in an alfa 2600 sprint by the way… just thought it might be of interest…

Yeah, about the same i'd think. Calipers will be a little bit heavier, but disks a little lighter as they aren't vented.

As far as my research has gone, the same basic caliper was also used on early 90's Transit, Rover SD1, and some Range Rovers.

Princess discs will bolt up to Mini Drive flanges acording to the drawing I found for them from brembo, I am sure Ken haywoods Cox/Coupe has these fitted too, also it states the weight of the disc and its heavy 4Kg from memory it was more than a metro vented disc wich weighs 3.7-3.8 Kgs,

When I fitted my large brakes to the front I saved about a 1kg per corner going from Std non vented 8.4 to Vented 10 inch discs with alloy willwood calipers and alloy drive flanges. The disc itself weighed 3.9Kgs from memory and its HUGE.

I noticed a difference in feel to the lower unsprung weight, difficult to put my finger on but it felt different riding the bumps and turn in.

I enjoyed reading about your brake conversion West, what model were the wilwood calipers?

I have been considering mondeo calipers, as these are used a lot in the anglia modifying scene… they'll fit inside 13s apparently and are super cheap

The expensive ones :D Midilights I chose these as they have Dust seals and are a more beefy caliper, If you have ever seen an aluminium calper flex you will be amazed, Hence another reason I went with the bigger caliper, I feel the prolites are a little soft and so are Hitechs

Kerching!

A bit of a contrast to sherpa brakes at £40 for the calipers and whatever the princess discs cost…

Pantera - what master cylinder are you planning to use? the standard mini item?

Discs new off ebay £6.52 the pair plus £8 shipping :D
Calipers will be from local scrappy.
I have braided lines to suit in my pile of bits.

Master will be standard tin-can with a remote cooper type servo, and see how it goes.

Nice one on the discs! I'll have to keep an eye out… was that an auction or a super-cheap BIN?

Just a lucky auction I suppose. The interest on the 16v club has pushed up the price of calipers on ebay recently tho.

I've seen a pair of these calipers (used) on ebay for £200  - purely because the guy used to have them fitted to a Mk2 Escort :|

The other thing is the discs need to be spun down from 270mm to 245 dia. This'll be free for me

Has anyone tried any other bigger brake discs for being a direct fit?
