There used to be a moulding like the one you've made in the kit but it was a but of a pain to fit and didn't provide the clearance to the carb provided by your design so most people didn't fit it.

Interesting that was a piece to raise the divider..

Moving on with cleaning up under the front bonnet.. here is with the paint stripped off, a trial fit of the wiper box, so I can weld up all the surplus holes I found on the top, all which could be letting in water...

Image

Then a skim of filler to flatten it out..

Image

And some high build primer..

Image

and some paint-able seam sealer..

Image

And finally some European Texture rock guard for the lower sills.. which can be painted over..

Image

Image

Image

Next up is some red color over all these areas..

Got a base coat of red primer on the deck area and the sills. Then two coats of final color on the deck area beneath the windscreen.. the sills will get painted again later with the rest of the car .... now back to more sanding and body prep..

I decided to do something different from sanding and filling, so mounted my center brake light LED assembly I bought a while ago. To pass inspection I have to have a center mounted brakelight, and had rigged up something earlier that I did not like.. so here is what I have now..

Using graph paper with spacing marked and a metal bar as a guide to keep the drill at the same height for all 24 holes...

Image

The lights installed.. they are clear rubbery material so fit tight and should be waterproof..

Image

An a few shots of them on.. they are really bright red, but that does not get captured by the camera...

Image

Image

Then back to making the front end latch properly and fit better to the doors and windscreen area...

Image

Then back to more sanding!

I had a lot of cracking and spidering around the boot lid hinges and latches, so I decide to make some metal backing plates to spread the load around on the fiberglass, and to stiffen the boot lid I added a stiffener strip..

Backing plates glued into place...

Then the backing plate was fiber glassed into place..

This is what I am using for the engine grills as well as the carb opening and the front grill..it's ABS plastic, so easy to cut and never any rusting!

It sanding weekend! the car has had all the paint sanded off with 80 grit sandpaper, and now working on moving up to 120 grit and spot filling any defects I am finding along the way.. the roller-ed and brushed on paint was very thick and took a long time to get it off and get the car flat as the paint was very wavy and textured.. My good friend Alan spent most of the day with me today sanding and getting dusty and here are the results so far..

It was a great day for moving the car outside and sanding, keeping the dust out of the garage. There are a lot of surprises under the paint, so will have to sort these out in preparation for a high build spray... I will be taking the sanding up to 320 before spraying the high build...

Making progress

The quality of the paint finish is all in the prep. Remeber this, I hate doing body work and had to keep telling myself this before i painted mine, the prep took me ages! I keep looking at mine and I am tempted to give it mine refresh in a couple of years as all the mileage I have covered over the years is starting to show a little.

Yes, I have the same feeling.. I hate all; the sanding and prep, but the better this is the better the final job. I have spent the last fours days along with a friend of mine helping part time to get the car where it is now, ready for a final 320 sand and then some high build primer..

More progress, but also delays..

Took the seats in to be redone.. here is before.. now waiting ..

Image

Got the car all prepped , and ready to shoot the high build and the weather has cooled off and raining, so not warm enough to spray this weekend.. maybe next week... now waiting..

Image

Image

I did get the door panels re-coated as that paint was good for a lower temp...

Hopefully the weather dries up and gets warmer.... now waiting....

Thanks!.. it is going to be red a color called Tarten Red, but removing the white form the mix so the color is a deeper red.. the color can be seen on my pics of the engine, and the area under the windscreen..although the true color never seems to come through in pictures!
