 Re: Handbrake
I've not long gone this route, so rough description from front - backwards.
Origional K3/Metro handbrake fitted with the T shaped 'balancer' from 400/600
Cables and mountings from 400/600
Calipers from 820 - the mounting holes almost line up, just need a couple of mm filed out, the brackets the hold the cable outer may need to be altered.
Disks - from memory these were skimmed to 10mm thick

 Re: Handbrake
Thanks for the information Malcolm, are you using 13" wheels or bigger? Thanks Peter

Hi John, How do you go about fitting cable ends? I have some brake cables with no end fittings at all and was thinking of machining some up in stainless and soldering them on?

 Re: Handbrake
I used pre-made nipples from Vehicle Wiring Services but stainless will be fine too. To be safe I silver soldered mine on. It's a lot stronger than soft solder. You could crimp them in a vice before you solder if you really want to be sure.

 Re: Handbrake
Many thanks Malcolm and all others for the info - I will start collecting bits for the winter project! However, I would also like to know if the calipers will still clear my 13" Metro GTi wheels, please?

Looks like I’ll be buying a few more bits from them.

The MGF disc is a thinner version of the Metro disc of the same diameter and height, so I would say the calipers will clear the wheels okay.

 Re: Handbrake
Malcolm, please can I clarify a couple of things from your previous post;
"Calipers from 820 - the mounting holes almost line up, just need a couple of mm filed out, the brackets the hold the cable outer may need to be altered.
Disks - from memory these were skimmed to 10mm thick"
1) I assume you were fixing these to standard metro hubs? 2) why did the disks need skimming - mine are 10mm. Or have they worn down?!
Thanks for your help, John

 Re: Handbrake
Have you guys seen this post from the 16vminiforum? http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13723At the bottom there's a very interesting bit on Golf brakes - which appears to be on a Coupe from the pics (Apologies if it's anyone already on here) Edit: Duh, just read it again - it's on an ABS Freestyle.
