Coil spring dimensions
Right looking into coil springs, I know there are 1.9 ID, 2.25 ID and 2.5Id My question is what is the outer diameter of these springs ideally 1.9 Id, as trying to work out just how much space I have not got to get a coil over in on the Coupe and thought i know you lot are a helpful bunch and some have coilovers to hand which they can measure for me . Cheers WEST

Re: Coil spring dimensions
Morning West I am having the same problem. The 1.9" springs I have are off the front of a westfield. They are 2.725" o/d I contacted Tweeks who say that it depends on the make but more importantly the poundage. The other thing I have found is that bike shocks are shorter in length and in dia. lamberetta do springs up to 220lbs and the Hondas have a screw height adj. Emailed the guy on ebay with 6" 220lbs 1.9" to ask o/d will let you know the answer if he replys

Re: Coil spring dimensions
The 1.9"s I've got are the same [68mm]. The 2.25's are about 3.2" [80mm].
Don't know about the 2.5's.

Re: Coil spring dimensions
Thanks Gents has given me some idea to play with, I managed to find a piece 2.5 and 3 inch exhaust tube at the weekend so might use them as a dummy shock to start with see if i can ge that in.
Only problem with motorbike shocks I can think of is the heat generated from working the shock, as I would had thought this would had been higher on a car than a bike. Also the available travel may be a problem as its surprising how long a shocke becomes when you want some sensible travel.

Re: Coil spring dimensions
Hi I asked about the heat,Most bike shocks have a second oil cylinder giving them more cooling. They also not only have the wieght of the bike but its rider all on one shock( in my case thats alot) I agree about the travel,Im working on 3" max movement of the wheel geared down to 1" at the shock,as I wont be on the road(I hate speed bumps) Having said all that if i can find a smaller spring (as the other Tim has, then I will stick to car ones.

Re: Coil spring dimensions
The problem you will have with a motorcycle shock absorber is the much lower level of dirt and weather resistance, especially the adjuster mechanisms.
They are not designed to cope with the level of gunge and grit thrown about in a car wheel arch and the expectation is that on a bike they will be generally kept a lot cleaner and inspected more often than a typical car spring/damper.
If you can live with the resulting much shorter working life and the fact that they seem to be far more expensive than similar car dampers then they should be fine.

Re: Coil spring dimensions
Thunderossa, those springs are surplus to my needs (too long) but as i said previously i don't know the rate. I suppose i could have a play with my pillar drill and bathroom scales I'm going to order a set of Protech coilovers (12" open length)

Re: Coil spring dimensions
Tim how many active coils have they got as i have an add on to one of my bits of softwaretrickery that works out coil spring rate. thats the last bit of info i need for it to calculate the rate but initial playing around suggest they will be around 80-100 lbs/in

Re: Coil spring dimensions
West -- have a look on the GAZ shocks website -- there's all sorts of info ref coil springs etc on their site -- I think they source their springs from Eibach who, I think, have their own website.

Re: Coil spring dimensions
Sounds about right with 6 active coils I got a value of about 110 lbs, with more coils you get a softer rate and I did try 12 last night but is seemed very soft somewhere near 50 ish from memory, your testing seems to prove this. I will get the numbers tonight from the software WEST
