I have got the engine started and there was no smoke from the wire's :lol: :P


:roll: but there is a problem the engine does not idle @ a steady idle speed it keeps revving up and down

Great that you got it running. Not sure about the uneven idle speed, i guess it could be a few things. Starting with the simplest, did you re-set the throttle position sensor? With the ignition on but not started fully press and release the throttle pedal at least five times and that should let the ECU know the range. My idle was a bit crazy until I'd done that.

If that doesn't sort it give us a few more details. If the range its varying over is 1k to 1,200 then it may be a loose connection on the temp sensor?

I did not set the throttle position sensor when I first started it up which was a bit scary as it run at over 4k then I found out you need to set the (tp) as you said .
thought it was all OK until I reved it up then the idle went crazy up and down.
I found if you touched the sensor it reved up so I have taken the (tp) of

I found this on the net

The TP sensor is mounted on the throttle body and
is driven from the end of the throttle spindle. The TP
sensor consists of a potentiometer which provides
an analogue voltage that the ECM converts to
throttle position information. The TP sensor signal is
required for the following vehicle functions:
• Idle speed control
• Throttle damping
• Deceleration fuel cut off
• Engine load calculations
• Acceleration enrichment
• Full load enrichment
• Automatic gearbox shift points.
The TP sensor is a potentiometer which acts as a
voltage divider in an external ECM circuit. The
potentiometer consists of a 420% resistive
track and a wiper arm, driven by the throttle spindle,
which sweeps over the track.
The track receives a regulated 5 V 4% supply
from the ECM, together with an earth path. As the
wiper arm moves over the track it will connect to
areas of different voltage ranging from 0 to 5 volts.
The ’output’ from the wiper arm is connected to the
ECM to provide an analogue voltage signal.
The TP sensor requires no adjustment as the ECM
will learn the lower voltage limit which correspond to
closed throttle.
If the TP sensor signal is missing the vehicle will
continue to run but may suffer from poor idle control
and throttle response. The ECM will store fault
codes which can be retrieved using TestBook.

so I swapped the sensor with the old engine a have taken out the (1.6 )
but the new vvc engine sensor was sprung return
I have started it up and it does seem to run better but I will have to try it some times to say it has fixed

I've got a spare TPS as the plastic throttle body that came with my VVC was cracked. It was a good excuse to get a 52mm throttle body :wink: so I was keeping the tps from the cracked body as a spare. If you want to give it a try let me know.

hI thanks for the offer of the tps I will see if this has fixed the problem it could be the Idle air control valve

did the 52mm one make any difference to the engine I could get one of them

Re 48 v 52mm I think there is a slight improvement with the 52mm over the 48mm but you only notice it when you are sucking a lot of air through so only over 6500 rpm? and to be honest I haven't been up there enough since changing everything else to do a proper comparison. The throttle response seems sweeter too but I guess all you are doing is showing a bigger opening for any given butterfly angle.

A few things I've read say that the 48mm body doesn't become restrictive until you are producing over 150bhp and that is why the 143 VVC had the 48mm and the 160 VVC had the 52. i.e. the 143 didn't need it. If you have a decent free flowing exhaust and induction set up then the 143 could easily pass 150 so would need the 52mm body to release its full potential at the top end. Throw in a bit of head work too and the 52mm certainly becomes a good investment.

However, apparently people who fit 52mm TB's to 1.4's are wasting their money!

hi sorry I think I have fixed the problem I don't think it was the TPS, in the end, I think it was the plastic throttle body

I started the car and I was still not happy
so I changed the throttle body with the alloy one from my old engine which had the TPS from the new vvc engine still on it
the alloy one just looks much better made

it now starts up and runs OK much more stable so I don't think it was the TPS just the plastic throttle body
you can see the light around butterfly in the plastic one you can just see in the photo the butterfly does not fit in the plastic body

The car runs much better now.
so all I have to do is wrap all the wire with some loom tape and clip it down. bolt on a fan fit all the parts back onto the car find
where I put the nuts screws and bolts and make a cover for the tank o and find some way to get the boot to close
And o and o yes just this and that

Um, there is still lots more to do

Yeah, getting mine to Stoneliegh is looking less and less likely with every passing day. I sent off the registration paperwork to the dvla to get the engine size changed to 1.8 at Easter, but I'm still to hear anything back from them :(

I sent my paperwork off to DVLA at the start of my engine change thinking I would get it done in time and got it back 3 weeks later just for them to say I need to get a garage to say on headed paper that the engine is in the car so I have to finish the engine change and get my local garage to do a report on it so I can send the paperwork back to DVLA
there is no way I would get it back in time.
why do they take so long
I am just going without my car
hope you get it back in time to go with your car

Yeah, I've got all the proper evidence, or at least I think I do, but it's the fact that it's now been 4 weeks is making me think they may have lost it as most people online seem to say 3 weeks is normal. I'd be half tempted to go to the dvla headquarters in person as will be going past Cardiff next week, but I rung them up and it needs to be done via post. :x
